What the hell has happened to the first quarter of 2007? I have been unable or unallowed (is that a word) to sit still for more than a few minutes for the past 3 months. Now as I sit on this airplane, I’m am forced to do just that. For the next two hours I am forced to still my legs and mind and reflect on the fastest 3 months I’ve faced in life so far.

For starters, this all goes back down to Pueblo, CO, where I found at least one part of my soul washed up on the barren desert rocks of Lake Pueblo State Park. After a fun-filled ski trip in Utah in January, I was sent to find a short-term home about 2 hours south of my long-term one. Alone and forced to reckon with the natives, I succeeded in overcoming the difficult challenge of building about $1.5M worth of pipes, roads, walks, and pavement. Pipes that provide your house with water, electricity, and also take away the less desirable stuff that you don’t want around. Roads you drive on, on your way to Bed, Bath & Beyond with the wife.
Between stressful daytime hours full of talk & action, and peaceful nightime hours of thought, I’ve managed to grow into a much stronger and confident human being.

During this time, my own life back in Denver was constantly burning my other end, and I had to endure the task of juggling my career performance and advancement with my domestic life. It was no easy job to do. I’ve spent dozens of hours in a truck, dozens more on the phone or internet, handling all of my affairs with the best efficiency I could. Sadly, no matter how hard I think I suffered, I feel more for my pet cat, Sambuca. The cat had no idea what was going on, just that she would see me for a few days or hours, then I’d be gone. Back and forth, back and forth. However, everytime I open the front door to my home, she would always greet me with superb optimism. Unfortunately, there were others in my life who were affected by my schedule that were not able to survive.

Aside from the demands of my work and personal life, I still managed to push the limits of adventure a step further, as I entered the 27th year of my existence on this world. My newfound passion for snowboard-mountaineering has started to develop into more than a hobby. After many years of trying new sports and many dollars spent on equipment, I can think of nothing more exciting to do than sticking on a set of climbing skins or crampons, and ascending a majestic rocky mountain peak, taking a quick glance at the view from the top, and then surfing down the steep slopes at top (safe) speed, back to civilization. I’ve been taking a class with the Colorado Mountain Club that has improved my skills an attitude on a weekly basis. Each trip I’ve pushed my stamina and adrenaline up and down 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 vertical feet in a day, with no thought to ever looking back. Last week we took a trip up Uneva peak, near Vail pass, a 12,000 foot windblown hunk of rock with dozens of steep couliors running down its side. After long sweaty hours of hauling up the rock, my first shot through an alpine coulior was like finishing one book in my volume of adventure and starting a new one. I gained the confidence that I could handle anything I’ve seen in the hundreds of ski movies I’ve watched stoned & drunk on the couch back home.

I’m heading across the dark flatlands of America on my way to my past. To see old friends and family. I am looking forward to this trip more so than any other trip to Illinois before it. I can’t wait to see familiar faces, comfortable voices, and jolly good times with no worry. Because if t he next 26 years of my life will go even higher and faster than the first, I’ll need a weekend in the Windy City to chill my ass out.

Obed, Kartik, Samp, and Delaney came out to visit me in the OC over the past week and we tore it up!

Wednesday, February 14

Samp’s flight came in to Orange County Airport right on time at 7:50p. The other three Boys got delayed on JetBlue and didn’t come in until 10:00p.

Our Valentine’s Day dinner plans thwarted, Samp and I tested out Alerto’s Mexican Food. It was surprisingly good, authentic Mexican grub.

Next, we went to my condo to drop off Samp’s gear, check out the digs, and chill with Paula and the dogs. After a quick stop at BJ’s for a Hef, Samp and I headed up to Long Beach Airport to pick up Obed, Kartik, and Delaney and we all headed back to BJ’s for a nightcap.

Thursday, February 15

Unfortunately, I had to cruise up to Beverly Hills to meet with a client, so the Boys headed down to Main Street in Huntington Beach for brunch. They chilled there and checked out the beach until I came back around 3:00p.

We hung out and had a few drinks at my place before we headed out to Kobe’s for some teppanyaki and sushi.

Friday, February 16

We got up and headed over to Knott’s Berry Farm right when it opened. Though I knew Samp was a big pussy before, I didn’t know how big… until he started crying when we tried to get him to go on some of the “big boy” rollercoasters.

However, he redeemed himself when he set the record for they day at the 3-point challenge:

Even though it’s literally about a mile away from my condo, it was my first time at Knott’s and I was pleasantly surprised with the thrill-level of some of their rides.

We ate lunch at the famous Mrs. Knott’s Restaurant, but I’m not sure it was worth the mysteriously long wait and the Burton-character-like people working there.

After Knott’s, we went back to my place to clean up and get ready for the evenings festivities. We started pre-drinking on the balconey and taste-tested a new and unreleased liquor product that Paula got from work.

That set us in the perfect mood for Hurricane’s where we got rocked, and who knows what happened…

Saturday, February 17

Waking up later, due to the previous night’s bender, we made our way to the beach. There, we played some volleyball, threw the football around, and a few brave souls jumped right into the cold Pacific:

After the beach, we headed back to the condo and began prepping for our feast. We got cleaned up and a few of the Boys went to the store to pick up the ingredients. In no time, everybody was hard at work.

The end result was a magnificent meal consisting of steak, mashed potatoes, asparagus, shrimp skewers, all cooked to perfection. Bread and pina colodas were served to top it off:

Sunday, February 18

We headed up the 5 to Universal Studios for the day. We hit up the City Walk where the Boys got their first taste of the world famous Tommy’s Burgers. Once we got inside the park, we went to work… I’ll try to remember what rides we went on: Terminator 2: 3D, Revenge of The Mummy, Backdraft, Jurassic Park, and the Studio Tour.

It was a beautiful day out until we got in line for the Studio Tour. Then all of a sudden, the temperature dropped like 20 degrees and it felt like it kept getting colder during the tour. Wearing shorts and t-shirts, we were all freezing after the tour, so we decided to call it a day and head back to the OC.

For dinner, we headed to my favorite restaurant, Sagan… which is right down the street by Knott’s.

Monday, February 19

I had to wake up at the crack of dawn to take Samp to the airport. By the time I got back, the rest of the Boys were up. We took our time and then headed down to Main Street again, stopping at In-N-Out on the way.

…And that was it!

Thanks to Obed, Kartik, Samp, and Delaney for flying out here. It was quite a happenin’ few days. We did a ton of stuff, but the time went by too fast… as always.

Can’t wait till next time!

—cK !

So, going into work earlier this week in Chi-town I notice that the edges of the River are frozen. I just think to myself, “Wow it must be pretty damn cold out there to freeze that little chunk of water.” Then as the week goes on, I notice that this whole river is frozen and there are birds sitting on it. In case anyone is wondering, it’s -5 degrees and with the wind chill it feels like -15. I love this city.

I guess this is the price to pay for living here because no other city tops Chicago in the summer time. BBQ’s, Beer Gardens, Cub’s day games. 3 more months!!!

So, Scott Wiese, this die-hard Chicago Bears fan was so passionate about the Bears winning the Super Bowl that he pledged to change his name to Peyton Manning if the Colts won!

Via the Herald & Review:

Wiese braved the snow to show up at the Macon County Courts Facility and file the paperwork to change his name to that of the star quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts. Wiese, a die-hard Chicago Bears fan who lives in Forsyth, had pledged to his friends that if his beloved team did not win Super Bowl XLI on Sunday, he would legally change his name to the man who led the Indiana nemesis to victory.

“A bunch of friends and I were talking one night before the game, and there was a little alcohol involved,” said Wiese, 26. “I made the bet, and now I’ve got to keep it. I chose Manning because, well, he is kind of the face of the Colts franchise.”

For those who had earlier doubted his resolve to go through with it, Wiese had signed a solemn pledge in front of some 200 people Friday night in Katz Piano Bar in downtown Decatur. With Sunday’s 29-17 score having declawed the Bears, Wiese duly presented himself at the courts facility to start the official name change process.

Now that’s commitment.

Hey peeps! If you stumbled over to this site for some reason, you may notice that it looks a bit different. We’re undergoing a bit of a redesign!

You can see the original version here:

TheBlackoutBoys.com Version 1

If this new design looks familiar to you, it may be because it looks like the Cabin11.com design. The development of Cabin11.com was a big undertaking that ended up sitting idle… So, since we’ve been meaning to redesign TheBlackoutBoys.com for quite awhile now, we are implementing the Cabin11 framework over here and slowly migrating everything over.

Once everything is fully fundtioning, the Cabin11.com domain will be redirected to The Blackout Boys’ Cabin11 photo album.

So, please feel free to browse around… there are a few photo albums already up. Many more will be added regularly.

A few things may be changing around and updating here and there over the next couple of weeks. If you see anything that is not functioning properly, please leave us a comment below.

Enjoy!
